Housing costs vary based on the number of rooms and occupants. Because the area is readily accessible by train, it is the northernmost county of the NY City Metro area, and is by far the most affordable.
The Arlington District of Poughkeepsie is one of the most vibrant neighborhoods in Dutchess County. Easy to get around on foot or bike, Arlington is situated just east of the City of Poughkeepsie and is home to Vassar College and a thriving business, cultural and community center. Along with many kinds of international casual dining from innovative grills to pizza, from sushi to BBQ, Arlington boasts an array of specialty retail shops featuring fine jewelry, clothing, art and collectibles, gifts, books, art supplies, hardware and health foods.
Mt. Carmel Neighborhood
Mt. Carmel District is just under a mile from Vassar Brothers Medical Center and close to The Walkway Over the Hudson and many waterfront Parks. Mt. Carmel is in the northwestern section of the city within walking distance of the waterfront, train station and the Walkway Over the Hudson. St. Anthony’s Street Festival is held in Mt. Carmel annually. There are a number of excellent local restaurants and family-owned shops in the area including Rossi’s Deli, named one of the country’s best college delis. The housing stock in Mt. Carmel is primarily single-family with a few apartments and houses for rent within its borders.
Spackenkill is a Poughkeepsie neighborhood south of the city and close to IBM and Route 9 shopping. Served by the highly regarded Spackenkill Union Free School District, there are a number of small neighborhoods located within the borders of Spackenkill. Near the center is a large expanse of green space offering a variety of recreational activities including kiting, biking walking, jogging and picnicking. The housing stock in Spackenkill is predominantly single-family homes; however, there are some homes for rent and apartment communities on the west side of the neighborhood.
Fairview is a hamlet in Poughkeepsie located north of downtown close to the Marist College campus. Inwood Lake is in the northwest section of the community and provides the residents of Fairview opportunities for fishing and boating. College Hill Park is directly south of Fairview and residents of the neighborhood can utilize the green space to engage in recreational activities. Both public and private schools service the community and gives families in the area options as far as their children’s education.
It only takes a few miles to reach gorgeous Dutchess County rural landscapes, farms and villages. There are some rental bargains to be found, although the market grows more competitive in the summer tourism season.
